SEDALIA, Colo. — Four Colorado electric cooperatives filed a federal complaint against Xcel Energy over the increased rates connected to a 2021 cold snap.

Like residential customers, the utilities saw their bill from Xcel increase significantly in the aftermath of Storm Uri. However, in a 482-page complaint, the cooperatives accuse Xcel of not using prudent business practices.

HOUSTON, Texas — The former CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said that his order to keep power prices at the maximum during last year's winter storm was issued at the direction of Gov. Greg Abbott, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.

Former ERCOT CEO Bill Magness testified in court Wednesday, saying that former Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) Chairman DeAnn Walker told him that Abbott wanted them to do whatever was necessary to prevent more blackouts during the storm, even as power plants were coming back online.

Lawsuit reveals shocking timeline of rising power prices during February freeze

SAN ANTONIO – Nearly a year since the deadly winter storm, CPS Energy is still pursuing a flurry of lawsuits accusing natural gas providers of price gouging.

The utility filed 18 lawsuits over the winter storm. About half have been dismissed and resolved. The rest have been consolidated under one judge here in Bexar County.

The Trouble Shooters uncovered the shocking timeline of just how much prices skyrocketed and why one company says CPS Energy only has itself to blame.

In court documents, CPS Energy calls the prices it paid last February “unconscionable” and “unhinged.” Natural gas company Energy Transfer shot back in its filing, calling CPS Energy “unprepared.”
